What Is Happening In Canada
It amazes me to read the news this morning with all of the things happening in the world surrounding the economic crisis that the opposition leaders in Canada are about to overthrow the current government. Why would anyone during what might be one of the worst recessionary times in our life and maybe ever would want to create even more turmoil.
For those that don’t know the Canadian government is very similar to the British governmental system. There are 155 seats in the house of commons these seats are elected individuals from ridings across the country. The current house has more seats held by the conservative government than any other party, while they don’t have what is called a majority government they are the official leading party.
What has happened over the last two days is the other three parties have put together what is being called a coalition. This coalition is made up of the Liberal party (Like the Democratic party in the US) and New Democratic party which is a socialist party and a party called the Bloc Quebecois (These guys are in the province of Quebec only and basically want the province to separate from the rest of Canada, no I am not making this up!) The conservatives are similar yet different from the Republican party in the US.
Again these three very different minded parties who recently lost the election back in October are now joining forces to form a majority of seats in the house of commons. Now the Governor General who officially appoints the government has to make a tough decision in the coming days.
There are a couple of things that might happen, first the Conservatives might prorogue the house of commons and adjourn all new sessions until the scheduled budget which is set to take place on January 27th 2009, this is one of the main so called contentions the three conjoined parties have an issue with. Basically they believe the budget should have been brought to the house by now given the current economic uncertainty. This really is more of any excuse rather than what the real issue is and that being a good old power struggle.
Steven Harper who is the current prime minister has been a bit of a bully according to the other house members. These three guys have decided the best thing for them and not the country is to join forces and take care of the bully.
Isn’t it funny how every time you turn around there are men struggling to be the cock of the walk and because of this it affects the rest of the country or worse the world. This kind of crap has caused wars, religious struggles and of course economic recessionary times.
I hope the Governor General has a good couple of nights sleep and realizes that Canada will be in a very tough position if she doesn’t make the right decision.
