The Destruction From Underwater Earthquakes And Tsunamis

On the shores of our country in any direction, we can have what is called an underwater earthquake or tsunami. Most of these don’t happen in the United States but there is always a chance. If one should happen, the damage would be nothing short of massive. The loss of life would be terrible because it would cause damage to buildings, humans, and animals living in the water as well as out of the water. With the extensive repairs that would most likely have to be done, it can take up to five or more years to complete, and the people that would be left alive would need massive relief efforts in the food supplies needed as well as getting their local infrastructure back up and running.

The effects of a tsunami will usually go unnoticed under a ship in mid ocean with the height of the wave being only two to three feet. The height of this wave could hit inland at as high as 100 feet. Could you believe the damage that much water would have on things inland? Even a 30-foot wall of water coming on land will have a wavelength of 6 miles with a speed of 20 to 25 miles-per-mile.

As most of us don’t have to worry about one of these things ever happening to us, we just don’t ever think about what Mother Nature could throw at us. The ones that live near our coasts are usually pretty prepared for these types of storms and have precaution measures in place. If one of these were to happen here, most of us would not be ready. If this alarm goes off, then you had better not wait to see if it gets really bad. Even if you want to hang around to see how high the wave gets, this isn’t a good idea because you might not be able to reach safety in time.

These will cause massive damage to not only our ways of life and everything around us but the potential for disease could cause additional risks. These can differ in several ways depending on the slope of the land and the size of the wave. The longer the wave, the bigger the damage. So if the warnings go off by your local authorities, follow their directions and never hang around. Just leave the area immediately. If the first wave isn’t the worst, the next ones will and it won’t give you much time to escape.
