How is it for the rich battered woman?

1) Disbelief

When they break their silence, a roar breaks out shoving them right back into hiding. People doubt that they are actually abused. “How can that be?” they hear, “Your husband is a pillar in the community.”

He can be a doctor, a lawyer, a politician, your community’s own clergy… If he serves in these caring/healing/protective positions, how in the world can he be an abuser? This dichotomy confuses outsiders looking in on affluent domestic abuse.

As an aside, it evens confuses Google. Try doing a Google search on domestic violence and wealth or money or affluent. These words connoting an upscale socioeconomic status cannot be found in combination with the term “domestic violence” (at least not at the time of this writing).

2) No Empathy

People withhold empathy for the circumstances of wealthy battered women. “You go on exotic vacations, live in a nice house, have your pick of the season’s best…”

The implication here is that you should “turn the check” with respect to you being slapped around and enjoy your wealth. It says that the lifestyle is the “price” for putting up with being battered.

3) False Claims and Re-victimization

When affluent battered women reach out to social services for help, the potential for the abuse they endure increases exponentially. She can become buried in the play-offs sponsored by the payoffs of their manipulating abusive partners.

Abusers are known for their ability to manipulate healthcare providers and law enforcement to establish false claims about their victims. It’s their way of discrediting the domestic violence survivor, and ultimately saving face by casting off any responsibility for alleged or documented domestic abuse.

4) Empty Legal War Chest

When they go to divorce court, all hell can break lose. They can be buried in pleading upon pleading characteristic of legal stalking in high profile divorce cases.

Oftentimes, these battered women stand in family court pro se’ representing themselves against their battering partner’s team of legal counsel. They may even have a list of divorce attorneys left in their wake once payment could not be forthcoming.

You see, most of the so-called affluent battered women have no control over the family money. So, when the chase is on to break the cycle of abuse, the financial spigot is turned off. And they remain at the mercy of their partner’s financial war chest-the resources defining their upscale status in the first place.

Then, when they try to draw from the same resources available to their less “financially empowered” counterparts, it doesn’t get any better. Unfortunately, “affluent” battered women reaching out to the public system for legal aid can be told, “We can’t help you because your needs for legal assistance will exceed our entire annual budget.”

5) The Heinous Crimes

Sadly, these are the domestic violence divorce cases wherein battered mothers may lose contact with their minor children, or get token contact via supervised visitation. These are the domestic violence survivors that fall through the cracks of the legal system-becoming childless, homeless, and penniless.

These are the brave women who thought they had it easier, as did everyone else, because of their wealth. And then, they recognize their challenges in breaking free ultimately can leave them re-victimized by their partner’s use of the family money.

If you are a bettered woman of wealth, be mindful of the challenges before you. And be prepared to deal with each and every one of them as you campaign for your breaking the cycle of domestic abuse.

The origin of the chifforobe dates back to 1908. Sears Roebuck was the first to advertise a chifforobe in its 1908 catalogue, declaring it a new invention. The word seems to be used most commonly in the Southern United States, though chifforobes do appear in lists of belongings in Alberta and elsewhere in the 1920’s.

Since the chifforobe made its appearance after the Industrial Revolution, it was common for it to be factory-made, though hand-made versions were also available. The wood of choice was often oak, though this could vary as well. The stain tended to be dark as well as finished with shellac.

The chifforobe was a practical piece of furniture, for it was not until later in the 20th century that reach-in or even larger closets were included as a part of the architecture of homes. By combining a hanging space with drawers, this versatile piece of furniture was a welcome way for homeowners to organize their clothing. Their popularity spilled over into literature and movies, beginning the 1953 short story by Carson McCullers entitled “The Ballad of the Sad Cafe”, and perhaps most famously in the 1988 novel by Thomas Harris, “The Silence of the Lambs”, where Clarice Starling remarks to herself that she knew the policemen with whom she must work came from houses that didn’t have closets but chifforobes, and that she could probably guessed what those chifforobes contained. Chifforobes were even the subject of a court case as recorded by the Southern Reporter in 1934, when seven chifforobes that had been ordered were never actually delivered.

Today, chifforobes are available as custom pieces or factory-made pieces from stores such as Crate and Barrel and the Pottery Barn, or even assemble-yourself ones made by Sauder. A doll-sized chifforobe is available through American Girl for its collection of dolls, and has an accompanying description that describes the wooden chifforobe as being a common piece of furniture found in bedrooms in Molly’s (the doll’s) time. At 24 inches in height, you are invited to own a piece of history in miniature.

While the chifforobe may not be regarded with the same reverence as a Hepplewhite wardrobe, it has its place in the history of American furniture. It is also a demonstration of American ingenuity, where two pieces of furniture were combined not to fulfill a practical purpose, but as a thing of beauty.

So, who is really winning at this money game anyway? And how do we stop playing with debt, scarcity and fear should we deem this system no longer meets our needs?

Thanks again to the fine developers at Headsoft and our trusty R4 DS Card homebrew scene, WarHawk is now available for YOU to play absolutely FREE on your Nintendo DS or DSi with the R4 DS Card (R4i SDHC for the DSi owners). The gameplay is true to the original, and while not an exact carbon copy remake or update, it does retain the same graphical feel and the gameplay mechanics themselves are true to the original.

WarHawk was remade and released as an NDS Homebrew Game. Which means that if you own and R4 DS card, it is free to download and play – made that way by the developers, though I would think donations may be an option if you so choose.

One of the things that the homebrew developers at HeadSoft wanted to ensure was that they retained the same “retro” or “old school” feel to the game itself. I think they succeeded in every way. And to put all of this work into a game, for the sheer love and joy of creating (or in this case – recreating) a game and then giving it out to homebrew games at no cost is really something to be applauded.

As for the levels and difficulty in the game, the game has 16 normal levels and once you complete the 16 normal levels, another 16 “mental” levels become available. The developers have said that it is definitely worth it to finish all of the levels – especially the “mental” levels for the true end and credit sequence that they have created.

From the developers website – below are the game controls for Warhawk DS on the R4 DS card. Playing it is just like playing any NDS game you would buy in the store, but there are some really cool and neat firing modes.

‘Start’ is used from the title screen to start the game and also within the game to pause. During play, the D-Pad is used for movement and the ‘A’ button for firing. Firing has 3 modes. A single press will release 2 shots. Press and hold will fire a power shot (12 times the damage and destroys all bases in it’s line of fire) and during “power-up” mode, holding fire will shoot a continuous stream of 16 bullets. Power-up mode can be enabled after level 2. During these levels a small ship will drift down the screen, shooting this will release a power orb that when collected will enable power-up mode for a limited time. Crashing into the drop ship will have the same effect but lose a small amount of energy. Energy can be regained during a level only by destroying a meteor. These take 2 powered shots to kill. Pressing start during game play also offers the option to quit and return to the title screen.

All in all, Warhawk DS is a perfect example of the professional / commercial quality homebrew games you can download and have absolutely free. While I personally suggest some type of donations – give these game creators some form of thanks – so they’ll continue to make more of these great games – it is not in any way a requirement to download and play these games. Former Houston Rockets executive George Postolos, who had an ownership group together to buy the team before Jordan swooped in at the last minute, thinks the deal shows Jordan really wanted the team.

“It’s a very substantial part of his net worth,” Postolos said. “He’s very, very committed.”

If Johnson had to let the team go, then Charlotte resident and best-selling author Omar Tyree says Michael Jordan is the ideal buyer. “The best case scenario is to continue to have a man of color own a major American sports team in the era of Obama,” reminds Tyree, in an interview with Suite101.com. “We need to have that to inspire more African American ownership, and be a part of the bigger business opportunities that typically pass us by.”

Jordan’s $275 million bid for the team was formally approved by the NBA Board of Governors on March 18. With his recent acquisition of the team, Jordan hopes to lead the team in a new direction. “I plan to make this franchise an organization that Charlotte can be proud of, and I am committed to doing all that I can to achieve this goal,” Jordan said.

NBA Commissioner David Stern is pleased to have Jordan as owner of the Bobcats team. “We are pleased that Michael Jordan’s purchase of majority ownership of the Bobcats was approved by the NBA’s Board of Governors and closed in such a smooth and expeditious fashion. We look forward to the continued growth of the Bobcats, on and off the court, under his leadership.”

The first order of business will be to see if the Bobcats qualify for the NBA playoffs this season for the first time. In the NBA, success on the court can take care of other problems rather quickly.
